Rose Joins Cheney in Supporting Turkey Sanctions

October 17, 2019
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative John Rose (TN-6) joined U.S. Representative Liz Cheney (WY-AL) yesterday in introducing a bill to impose sanctions on Turkey in response to Turkey's invasion of Syria and attacks on our allies, the Kurds.

"We will not turn a blind eye to the actions of those who threaten peace and freedom around the world, especially those who seek to harm our friends and allies. There must be severe consequences for Turkey's attack on the Kurds," Representative Rose stated. "What we see from Turkey is a dangerous reversal of the progress our country has made to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which we have worked hand-in-hand with our Kurdish allies to achieve. Equally concerning are reports of Turkey firing at or near known U.S. outposts with an active U.S. troop-presence, demonstrating blatant disregard for U.S. forces and our country's peace-seeking efforts in the region."

"I fully support President Trump's decision to issue sanctions against Turkey," Rose continued. "It is my hope that severe sanctions will send a strong message to Turkey and begin to restore protections for our allies and friends, the Kurds. I am proud to cosponsor this important legislation with Rep. Cheney to affirm Congress's support of expeditious enactment of sanctions against Turkey."

The legislation, which was introduced October 16, 2019, would impose sanctions on Turkish federal officials and military transactions. Rep. Rose was an original cosponsor with Reps. Liz Cheney (WY-AL), Kevin McCarthy (CA-23), Steve Scalise (LA-1), Scott DesJarlais (TN-4), Mark Green (TN-7), Phil Roe (TN-1), and over 90 House colleagues.
