U.S. Rep. Rose Votes to Investigate China and Weaponization of Federal Government
Washington, DC—Today, U.S. Representative John Rose (TN-06) voted “Yes” on House Resolution 11 to establish a Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party and House Resolution 12 to establish a Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government. House Resolution 11 passed with an overwhelming majority 365-65, including 146 Democrats who voted “Yes.”
Rep. John Rose (TN-06) released the following statement:
“Tennesseans deserve answers on the nefarious practices of the Chinese Communist Party. They also want to know why the U.S. federal government has been turned against them to limit their speech and trample on their liberties. By making it a priority to establish these two select committees on our second week of the 118th Congress, Tennesseans are one step closer to getting the answers they deserve.”
The Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party will be composed of 16 Members appointed by the Speaker, including nine Republicans and seven Democrats, after consultation with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. The Committee will investigate and make policy recommendations on the status of the Chinese Communist Party’s economic, technological, and security progress and its competition with the United States. It will have no legislative jurisdiction but may hold public hearings in connection with its investigative functions.
The Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government will be under the jurisdiction of the House Judiciary Committee, which will be chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan (OH-04). The select subcommittee will investigate how the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security, and other executive branch agencies obtain information from and provide information to the private sector, non-profit entities, or other government agencies to facilitate action against American citizens. It has been given sweeping investigatory powers that include access to information shared with the House Intelligence Committee and the authority to review ongoing criminal investigations. Speaker McCarthy will name thirteen Members to the panel, including five Democrats, after consultation with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Rep. Rose introduced the Unmasking the Origins of COVID-19 Act in the 117th Congress, which seeks to reward individuals who provide credible information regarding the origins of the COVID-19 outbreak.
U.S. Representative John Rose is currently serving his third term representing Tennessee's Sixth Congressional District and resides in Cookeville with his wife, Chelsea, and their two sons, Guy and Sam. The Sixth District includes Cannon, Clay, Cumberland, DeKalb, Fentress, Jackson, Macon, Overton, Pickett, Putnam, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, Van Buren, and White counties as well as portions of Davidson, Scott, Warren, and Wilson counties.
