U.S. Rep. Rose Votes “Yes” to Repeal Funding for New IRS Agents
Washington, DC—Today, U.S. Representative John Rose (TN-06) voted “Yes” on the H.R. 23, Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act, which would repeal funding for the 87,000 new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agents included in the Democrats’ so-called “Inflation Reduction Act.” The Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act passed the House by a vote of 221-210after being introduced by Rep. Adrian Smith (NE-03). Representative Rose is an original cosponsor of the bill and introduced an amendment to the Continuing Appropriations and Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act in the 117th Congress that included similar language.
Rep. John Rose (TN-06) released the following statement:
“Republicans are committed to restoring accountability within our federal government, and there is no government agency less accountable to the American people than the IRS. Democrats have long used the IRS and the tax code as political weapons, targeting conservative groups during the Obama Administration and recently releasing Former President Trump’s private tax returns. I have no doubt that the 87,000 new IRS agents would directly target and harass Middle Tennesseans, which is why I’m proud this was the first bill Republicans passed in the 118th Congress.”
Background:
On August 16th, 2022, President Biden signed the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act” into law, which provides funding to the IRS for approximately 87,000 new IRS agents. According to an analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), at least $20 billion of the new revenue Democrats hope to collect from taxpayers will come from lower- and middle-income earners and small businesses. Additionally, according to the CBO, an IRS with 87,000 new agents will cause audit rates to “rise for all taxpayers,” and a conservative analysis shows that returning audit rates to 2010 levels means 1.2 million more audits, with 70,000 of those falling on taxpayers making $75,000 or less.
Rep. Rose voted “No” on the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act” on August 12th, 2022.
